It’s no secret that even the best design tools and products in the market today fall short in key areas of accessibility. There's a misconception among developers that these gaps are taken care of when you work with various libraries or platforms, and that's simply not true. So how do you bring awareness and a solution to a problem that exists globally across all devices and platforms? Enter the Accessibility Theme Builder and our paid mentorship opportunity.
Launched in 2023 by Discover® and donated to FINOS, this project taps right into an unsatisfied need in the marketplace to build and improve accessibility into the core of how design systems are built. There are incredibly dynamic design systems being created, but if you don't have the knowledge about how to make those systems accessible, things fall apart right there in the design stage. What we're trying to do is build the logic for accessibility into the way you build components, both in your design files and in your code. Accessibility Theme Builder is the glue that would keep all those elements accessible throughout the process. We've been successful in demonstrating the need and that the logic can be built into a design system, and now we're trying to make it more usable. That’s where this amazing mentorship opportunity comes in.
We’re looking to partner with someone who is excited about exploring the intersection of design and development and can help bring increased flexibility to Accessibility Theme Builder through their knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, and React. Accessibility has always been very important to me and it’s something that I’m extremely passionate about. That said, this mentee will join me and other Discover engineers to work both in the SDK as well as in the front end of Accessibility Theme Builder. We all know how busy life is and while this is not a small undertaking, it’s an amazing opportunity to build your open-source portfolio, get paid for your contributions, and make a difference in the world through a true tech-for-good initiative.
