Open Source Readiness - Weekly Update - 18 July 2023

Written by Rob Moffat | 7/18/23 2:48 PM

This year at FINOS we are focusing on one of FINOS' key existing projects: Open Source Readiness. This is FINOS' term for helping the finance industry "do open source properly".

Welcome to this week’s Open Source Readiness blog!

Podcast Episode

First up, I was invited onto a podcast with Ben Rometsch of flagsmith.com to talk about Open Source Readiness and the role I have at FINOS, and the journey we’re on to try and promote open source development within banks.  It was great talking to Ben who has co-presented with FINOS at events before.

We talked about the good old days of Eclipse and Tomcat, and about how I got into open source software, how I met the FINOS team through my work with Symphony, we talked about the journey that firms in financial services are on towards open source mastery and the Open Source Readiness initiative.

We came to some interesting conclusions about the Log4Shell vulnerability and also talked about FINOS projects such as FDC3, Legend and CDM and how all these projects become intertwined through open source.

As well as the audio version and transcript, Ben has also summarized the conversation in an accompanying blog article covering the key points of the interview.

It’s SIG Week!

On Wednesday (3pm GMT, 10AM EST) it’s the Open Source Readiness SIG meeting! Zoom details are in the link.

Last week we had a very in-depth conversation about Citi’s open source policy document, so we’re going to carry on with that again.

Also, we’ll be discussing the first of two pull requests from Brittany Istenes of Fannie Mae covering best practices around interacting with software foundations.

Come along and have your say!
