FINOS response to COVID-19: An Open Letter to the Community

Dear Community,

As the world responds to the unprecedented risk posed by COVID-19, our team is constantly monitoring the situation and adjusting our plans as needed, I wanted to reach out to you for two reasons, to outline our plans to respond to this situation and to describe how we are redesigning our operations to ensure our Community continues with its momentum.

In response to COVID-19, firstly we fully realized that the kind of in person interaction that often characterizes and cements open source Communities will simply not be possible over the foreseeable future. The safety of our Community and team will always be our first priority.

For this reason, over the course of the last two weeks we had to make the following difficult decisions:

Square’s commitment to open source, which CEO Jack Dorsey introduced in a short Twitter thread late Wednesday night revealing Square Crypto, demonstrates the company’s commitment to the quest for a native internet currency ー which Dorsey first spoke about almost a year ago at the Consensus conference in New York City in a speech that made him somewhat of a hero in the crypto community.

In an interview that spanned a range of pressing fintech topics, Toms discussed in depth the Financial Desktop Connectivity and Collaboration Consortium, a FINOS program, and the standards it produces as bringing "application interoperability onto a trader’s desktop on the buy-side, or onto a portfolio manager’s or operation manager’s desktop."

A Brave New World for Open Source and Financial Services

 Last month, we at the Symphony Software Foundation, were proud to host the Open Source Strategy Forum in New York City. We were joined by over 300 industry professionals from financial services, financial technology, open source, and beyond. With keynotes delivered by whurley (Goldman Sachs), Amber Baldet (J.P. Morgan), John Stecher (Barclays), Nithya Ruff (Comcast), Joe McCann (NodeSource), Jim Jagielski (CapitalOne), and others, complete with 30+ talks, it was an incredibly valuable day of content and networking. But most importantly we built the identity of a new Community, one that will drive open innovation in the industry. Thanks to all of you who joined us there.
